Delivering Value to the Mining Industry - Komatsu 930E and 830 Suspension Cylinder Test Bench

When Spencer Fluid Power wanted to improve their service and testing, they turned to Autodesk® Inventor® 3D modeling. This software enables the user to safely integrate AutoCAD® and 3D data into a single digital model – thus creating a digital prototype of the final product. Because the Inventor model is an accurate 3D digital prototype, designs can be optimized and validated digitally before creating a physical prototype.

Mike Crain of Spencer Fluid Power designed a test bench for pressure testing of Komatsu 930E and 830 suspension cylinders utilizing the software. The bench is designed to test the cylinder with the rod extended to the normal “riding position” of the cylinder, when it is installed on a loaded haul truck. The intent is to test the cylinder seals in the high wear section of the cylinder rod. The cylinder has a 17” diameter piston, and the cylinder is charged with 1000 psi of nitrogen. This exerts 227,000 pounds of thrust on the stop plate of the bench. Mike designed the bench to handle the shear, bending and buckling stress.  However, Inventor made modeling the bench more efficient than it would have been otherwise.
