Why Use Barksdale Transducers
Monitoring and Controlling Excavators
Hydraulic excavators are used in a wide range of applications, including road construction, laying pipelines and mining. The excavator is a versatile piece of equipment that can be fitted with attachments such as tilt-rotators, breakers, grapplers and augers, allowing it to be used in other applications besides digging. The entire system relies on the transfer of hydraulic fluid acting upon cylinders for movement and function. Pressure transducers serve as a critical component in monitoring and controlling the hydraulic system. In this application, the Series 600 transducer is used to sense hydraulic oil pressure in the pilot system (the system that allows the pilot to control the excavator) and the main hydraulic pump. System pressure can vary up to 6,000psi. Typically, a 4-20mA analog signal is sent to an on-board controller based on the system pilot pressure. The transducer is ideal to control the displacement of the main pump and hydraulic flow to the directional control valves that have the ability to control several excavation functions.
Transducers also offer advanced feedback for engine and tool control, as well as monitoring pressures in the drive train (clutch, brakes, or engine). The lower cost, rugged, reliable and compact size requirements make the Series 600 Transducer a good fit for these applications.
